According to a senior investor, GMail, upon its public release requires a cell phone number in order to join. Let's hear some ideas on what they may do with it.

They already have tons and tons of cell phone numbers thanks to running an SMS gateway and due to making their search engine available via SMS text messages. So far, they've done absolutely nothing overt with those numbers, and I imagine they'll continue doing that. At most, they'll use the numbers to track uniqueness, since most people don't have multiple cell phone numbers. A cell phone number is a lot more unique than an IP address.
